Contrary to popular belief, a dive watch is not only used by divers but is also used by all those working in high-pressure areas. This includes spelunkers (people who venture into caves), people who work in mines and people who work in high pressure industrial environment.
After my son Fionn graduated from the Technological University Dublin earlier last year, he got a job as safety supervisor at the Shakhterskaya coal mine in Donbass (Ukraine). Fionn says the miners there not only work in dangerous conditions due to the depths they work in, they also have to deal with enormous atmospheric pressures similar to that faced by deep sea divers.
In the weeks after my son told us about securing the job, he had mentioned that he would have to buy a dive watch. I told him not to and that I would like to buy one for him as a graduation present. Which is why a few days later, I was searching for dive watches. Of course, with the lockdown due to Covid in place, I could not go out to watch stores in the neighbourhood so instead, I searched online (and as it turned out, a good thing too).
My search led me tohttps://www.citywatches.ieThe site had several brands to choose from. The well-known brands had dive watches that were frightfully expensive. I also found they stocked Vostok watches which is a Russian watch making firm that has a history and reputation to rival any major watch maker in Europe.
I recognized the name because my great great uncle Cedrik ran a watch repair store in Dublin and he had a collection of antique Vostok watches.
Anyway, coming back tohttps://www.citywatches.iethey had a small collection of analog professional watches that had a distinctive look. They were all attractively priced and included a decent discount. For e.g the Vostok Europe Anchar Limited Edition Automatic Diver’s NH35-510A587-LS 300M Men’s Watch had a retail price of €794 but after discount, was being offered for €631.
A rather unique feature of the Vostock watches is that they have jewels in them that make the mechanical watches very accurate and last longer. The Vostok EuropeAnchar limited edition automatic diver’s nh35-510a587-ls 300m men’s watch in particular, has 24 jewels. Apart from the jewels, its other features include a good quality leather belt connected to a stainless-steel case that housed the watch machinery, automatic movement (movement of the hand is converted into kinetic energy that generates power to recharge an internal battery).
The Vostok EuropeAnchar limited edition automatic diver’s nh35-510a587-ls 300m men’s watch also sports a scratch resistant mineral crystal placed over a black dial. The hands and hour markers are large and coated with luminous material.
I showed the piece I had intended to buy to Fionn and he said “ahh, great grand-dads company?” “Yes” I replied and asked if he liked it? He took a look at the watch and features listed and said “yup, this will do”.
I’d like to mention that the watch arrived after two weeks and my boy seems quite happy with it. In fact, he sent us a picture showing the watch keeping perfect time even at the bottom of the Shakhterskaya coal mine.
